Hello Friends,

I’m using my old Tumblr to distribute this mixtape for the Project Music Project 2012 initiative. Not because I want to call attention to this ol’ defunct music blog, but because it’s a great format for this type of thing.

I’ve been assigned “play” and have tried to put together a playful mix of music, hopefully not completely overzealous in its focus on the proverbial “sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.” However, to say those elements aren’t a heavy thematic chord through the mix would be an understatement. As a professional, fun-loving and relatively unencumbered adults living in LA, shouldn’t our playtime be a boozy, hazy mix of good times spent with friends and lovers?

Because I’ve complained about the process of having to download people’s mixes in the past, I’m proud to be the first to offer a streaming option for my sonic selects. The streaming site is mobile compatible as is the HTML5 player at the bottom of this post.

I’ll concede that some of it sounds just like what it is, movie score. But this is one thick-as-hell movie score.

LISTEN: “Bang Bang Bang” by Mark Ronson featuring MNDR and Q-Tip (via The Fader)

Mark Ronson premiered “Bang Bang Bang” a few days ago on Zane Lowe’s show. It’s a super catchy pop song with a fairly simple beat. Nice vocals on MNDR sounding like a British Santigold.

Record Collection is set to be released in September and features collaborations with Boy George, Miike Snow, Theophilius London and others

I’ve had a crush on the song “Yours to Keep” since the first time I heard it, in the soundtrack to the snowboard film Afterlame. (That soundtrack, BTW, was full of hits, check out a few more below.) For a song released in 2000(!), it still sounds fresh and contemporary and really fits in nicely with a lot of the new, synth-heavy chillwave tunes. Plus, it’s a total summer slammer.

Anyway, as it goes with music, sometimes you forget about the old stuff you really like while you struggle to stay atop of the endless torrent of exciting new tracks. It had been a long time since I’d listened to or thought about “Yours to Keep,” that is, until a new song came along that triggered my memory.

That track was Neon by Teen Daze. Listened to back-to-back, I think these songs really have a lot in common, both in sound and general tone. So thanks, Teen Daze, for putting out a great song that reminded me of another really great song.

It seems like there is a new mindblowing track coming out at every turn these days. It just so happens a lot of them are aiding in the inevitable change of season quickly approaching.
